Al-Husayn ibn Salam was a Jewish rabbi in Yathrib who was widely respected and honoured by the people of the city even by those who were not Jewish. In the nineteenth year after the Hijrah, 'Umar dispatched an army to fight against the Byzantines. In it was 'Abdullah ibn Hudhafah As-Sahmi. News of the Muslim force reached the Byzantine emperor, Heraclius. He had heard of their sincerity of faith, and their willingness to sacrifice their lives in the way of Allah and His Prophet. When the prophet started sending his messengers to the kings of other countries at that time he sent Duhayyiah Al Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Heraclius of the Roman in order to invite him to Islam.
